April 4th is going to be an epic day for Cohesity as we’re making a couple of great announcements. Let me start with the tidal wave as we say. Cohesity raised its largest funding round to date, raising over $90 million in a Series C round co-led by investors GV (Google Ventures) and Sequoia Capital.

We have attracted and gain the support of industry pioneers such as Cisco Investments and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) who also participated in this round as strategic investors, joining Accel Ventures, ARTIS Ventures, Battery Ventures, DHVC (formerly Danhua Capital), Foundation Capital, Qualcomm Ventures, Trinity Ventures and Wing Venture Capital. This broad and deep participation validates Cohesity as a visionary and transformative leader in the storage industry. The decision to seek additional funding was driven by a rapid uptick in customer demand for Cohesity’s hyperconverged secondary storage platform, which debuted over one year ago. That is not all; we are also announcing the company’s latest software release, Cohesity 4.0. The new version adds several new features and capabilities to enrich company’s enterprise secondary storage platform. Key features such as native S3-compatible object storage, a new NAS adapter for expanded data protection coverage and erasure coding for increased storage efficiency.

Cohesity 4.0 new features and capabilities:

  • DataPlatform clusters support Erasure Coding (EC) as an additional space-efficient feature. Instead of only relying on replication factor of two to support single node failures.
  • With Erasure Coding, the cluster can distribute blocks across multiple nodes in the cluster and with less overhead and increase the usable capacity by up to ~43% with the ability to support multiple node failures.
  • Providing a choice for protection and availability between replication or erasure coding
  • Erasure coding
    • 3+1 or 5+2 configuration
    • Increased redundancy with 5+2 (2-node redundancy
    • Increased usable capacity: 50% more with 3+1, 43% more with 5+2
Data Protection:
  • DataProtect software includes the support for NAS adapters that allows organizations to efficiently backup NAS environments onto Cohesity.
  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) – improved granular controlled access with the ability to create custom profiles for administrators, operators or end-users that can be applied to designated data views on the Cohesity cluster. Watch the RBAC demo for a closer look.
  • VMware VM Folders and Tag – support the ability to organize and manage backup jobs with both VM folders and tagging. Providing admins with the flexibility to protect the virtual infrastructures in the same fashion they organize it and manage it by arranging policies and applying them to custom classes of virtual machines that they can specify by folder name or by tag.
Object Storage Service:
  • Organizations can access data via a native S3 protocol, providing customers the ability to store all unstructured data in one web-scale system that automatically eliminates all redundant copies, and
    furthermore, can transparently tier this data into public or private cloud services for additional flexibility and cost-savings.
  • Provides better management of unstructured data with simultaneous access it via a broad selection of enterprise protocols to fit application needs.
File Services
  • New enhancements to Cohesity’s Distributed File Services by adding write-once-read-many (WORM) technology to prevent users from accidentally erasing or altering sensitive information.
  • WORM is frequently utilized for regulatory or corporate compliance. With Cohesity use of WORM organization can also assign quotas used by the file system.
