VMware LogoHere’s an insider exclusive: just yesterday I posted about the community release of VMware vCenter Mobile Access, and I told you about some of its awesome capabilities. The video demo showed a Blackberry device using the application, which was cool and all, but I have some news that is going to push the use of VMware to amazingly new heights. When I heard this news I couldn’t contain myself because I think this is something that a lot of people have been waiting for. So without further ado… drum roll please.

VMware is releasing a mobile application that works with the iPhone. This is an exclusive folks. See it here first. You can manage the soon to be released vSphere platform from your iPhone. The virtual terrain has just extended to your touch screen! The Technology Preview for vCMA went live today, so after reading this post and watching the video demo, make sure to go and download the appliance from the VMware communities site and configure it in your environment and let me know how you’re going to benefit from such a tool? I want to hear from you guys – what potential do you see with this release?

vCMA

The situation may sound familiar: You’re out of the office and computer issues come up.  You want to fix them, but you don’t have access to your computer.  All you have is your Blackberry device.  VMware is starting to provide solutions for just this problem… and in doing so, they’re giving you one more reason to call your Blackberry device Crackberry.

A recent post about VMware’s MVP platform showcased a video from VMworld 2009 that gave a glimpse of VMware Mobile Virtual Platform hypervisor, one of the company’s initial crossovers into the field of mobile technology.  Well VMware’s advancements in mobile computing does not stop there.  Now they are about to release another groundbreaking application.  As virtualized datacenter environments continue to expand, the need for flexible tools aimed at managing access becomes a must.  VMware’s new application offers just these kind of solutions.  vCenter Mobile Access (vCMA) is going to give you the access you were missing in other VMware infrastructures.  Functions such as the ones listed below can be executed from the convenience of your mobile device:

  • Restarting Virtual Machines
  • Migrating Virtual Machines (VMotion)
  • Searching  for Virtual Machines
  • Execute recovery plans with SRM
  • Access Schedule Tasks, Alarms and Events

The vCMA Technology Preview will be made available in the popular virtual appliance format in April this year. The vCMA server must be connected to VMware vCenter or any of the ESX servers that you want to manage.  Once the server component is set up, you can manage your datacenter from the convenience of your mobile phone. Below is a diagram of how things should be set up.

You’ll be able to get more information from the VMware VMTM community site later, when the product is made available. In the meantime check out the video below.  The demo is done from a Blackberry device but vCMA works with Windows Mobile and with the worlds greatest… the  iPhone.
