The situation may sound familiar: You’re out of the office and computer issues come up. You want to fix them, but you don’t have access to your computer. All you have is your Blackberry device. VMware is starting to provide solutions for just this problem… and in doing so, they’re giving you one more reason to call your Blackberry device Crackberry.
A recent post about VMware’s MVP platform showcased a video from VMworld 2009 that gave a glimpse of VMware Mobile Virtual Platform hypervisor, one of the company’s initial crossovers into the field of mobile technology. Well VMware’s advancements in mobile computing does not stop there. Now they are about to release another groundbreaking application. As virtualized datacenter environments continue to expand, the need for flexible tools aimed at managing access becomes a must. VMware’s new application offers just these kind of solutions. vCenter Mobile Access (vCMA) is going to give you the access you were missing in other VMware infrastructures. Functions such as the ones listed below can be executed from the convenience of your mobile device:
- Restarting Virtual Machines
- Migrating Virtual Machines (VMotion)
- Searching for Virtual Machines
- Execute recovery plans with SRM
- Access Schedule Tasks, Alarms and Events
The vCMA Technology Preview will be made available in the popular virtual appliance format in April this year. The vCMA server must be connected to VMware vCenter or any of the ESX servers that you want to manage. Once the server component is set up, you can manage your datacenter from the convenience of your mobile phone. Below is a diagram of how things should be set up.
